Release Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:30 a.m.
To celebrate Virginia Farmers Market Week, the Virginia Beach Farmers Market will have a Watermelon Festival on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be watermelon rolling contests, seed spitting contests, pony rides and of course, a large selection of locally grown produce, Virginia-grown and Virginia-made products.
During the week of Aug. 3 – 9, farm communities in the Commonwealth will hold a variety of special events to celebrate Virginia’s rich agricultural heritage. From a statewide “Eat Local for a Day” challenge to a local watermelon festival, there will be unique opportunities to “go green” while having fun and enjoying the benefits of delicious, Virginia-grown produce and products.
In support of Gov. Kaine’s declaration of Virginia Farmers Market Week, the Virginia State Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) is holding an “Eat Local for a Day” challenge and is offering a prize package of Virginia products for the winner. Visit http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/vagrown-july/contest.shtml for contest rules and details.
Buying produce from local farmers is a perfect way to “go green” and save time, energy and expense. Because these sellers are located nearby, freshness, flavor and nutrition are optimal as their produce is only harvested at peak. Also, with reduced transportation time, farm products reach consumers more quickly to preserve quality. Buying locally keeps revenue here to support Virginia agriculture and the state’s overall economic vitality. According to the VDACS, there are many health advantages of eating Virginia-grown fruits and vegetables: |

Virginia Beach 9-1-1 Receives National Reaccreditation |
Release Date: Wednesday, July 30, 2008 11:30 a.m.
On July 26, 2008 the Virginia Beach 9-1-1 Center (VB9-1-1) was awarded reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) at the CALEA annual summer conference. VB9-1-1 is the first city emergency communications center in Virginia to earn CALEA reaccreditation. VB9-1-1 first earned CALEA accreditation in 2005 and must meet or exceed the Commission’s 216 communications standards every three years in order to remain accredited.
A team of CALEA assessors was on-site at VB9-1-1 from April 26 through April 30, 2008 to conduct an audit of the agency’s organization, processes, procedures, and policies to verify compliance. Accreditation is an acknowledgement that symbolizes professionalism, excellence and competence in the field of emergency communications.
The final CALEA report stated: “In conclusion, the VB9-1-1 Center is a modern, well-run agency that serves the citizens of Virginia Beach, VA extremely well. Its personnel are well-led, exceptionally well trained, and well prepared to perform their emergency communication services to the community. The agency is clearly an organization that demands its personnel meet high professional standards and is deserving of continued accreditation.”
VB9-1-1 is a bureau of the city’s Department of Communications and Information Technology (ComIT). VB9-1-1 employs more than 112 operational and administrative personnel. ComIT Director Gwen Cowart said, “We are extremely proud to have earned reaccreditation from CALEA. Our voluntary pursuit of this accreditation is a testament to the city’s commitment to provide the best public safety services possible to our community, as well as to the dedicated men and women of VB9-1-1 who help to save lives and property every day.” |
